The library has a range of quality juvenile or children’s books.  Aside from the traditional classics such as The Little Engine That Could and contemporary favorites such as the Harry Potter series, there is range of quality multicultural books.  Cristina Kessler is an author who has written thirteen  books about young people in Africa.  Our library has two of her award winning books.

Our Secret, Siri Ang tells the story of a 12 year old Kenyan Masai girl who while out gathering wood for her family and comes upon a black rhino giving birth. Namelok decides to keep her find a secret after poachers kill the mother rhino.  Not surprisingly , Namelok has two other secrets that make this story especially poignant.  This young adult chapter book relates  the challenges Masai culture faces in contemporary Africa as well as the gender role expectations in the culture.

One Night, A Story from the Desert is a gentle coming of age tale of a young man who while tending  the family’s goats, must spend the night in the dunes away from home.  When he returns with a baby goat in the herd, the tribe is pleased to recognize his resourcefulness and courage and recognize him as a man.

The Juvenile Collection is on the second floor of the library.  Please come and check out the shelves.  You are sure to find a familiar title and also an unfamiliar book to please you.
